Self-Care Strategies to Survive the Holiday Season

The holiday season is the epitome of juxtaposition. On the one hand, the holidays are meant to be a time of cheer and connection with loved ones. Yet on the other hand, the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves and others makes the holiday season a time of stress and overwhelm as well. Many people can’t wait for the holidays to be over so that they can get back to a calmer way of life. So today, I offer you some strategies for enjoying the holiday season through simple self-care strategies.

As we lead up to the holidays, one effective strategy for reducing stress and increasing cheer, is to release expectations. Usually the scenarios we paint in our minds are vastly different from how things turn out in real life. Instead of fretting about having things turn out a certain way, take a breath and exhale any expectations you have. Set a resolve to accept that what happens is beyond your control and to live in the present moment. Maybe the unexpected guest or blip in the details will be the highlight of the party!

During the holidays, everything can be so busy and hectic that when they’re over, we feel a sense of loss or regret. When visiting with loved ones, there are a few things you can do to make those moments together extra special this year. The first method is to listen whole-heartedly with those you interact with. We often get distracted during conversations, either with our own thoughts, technology, or whatever else is going on in the room. Take some moments to listen with intent and give your loved ones the attention they deserve. Another quick tip is to take an extra hug this season from people you see rarely or are getting up there in age. Appreciate these present moments with them, and maybe even let them know that you’re grateful to have them in your life!

Next, you can look at your internal voice. Instead of talking down about yourself for indulging in your favourite holiday foods, practice mindful eating, a technique of observing and savouring the first few bites of food. This simple act can bring you into the present moment in your body and can make the food you’re looking forward to this season taste even more flavourful!

Lastly, take a few moments to slow down this season! Enjoy an evening without technology, either spending good time with your family, or just taking a slow, quiet evening to yourself. Whenever you think of it, treat yourself to some nice, deep breaths, regulating your nervous system and keeping you grounded in the present moment.

With these self-care strategies in mind, you’ll be able to enjoy a more cheerful holiday, grounding yourself in the present moment and enjoying time with loved ones, which really, is what matters most this season.
