Eco-Friendly Ways to Transition Into Fall

Between back-to-school, comfort season, and the lead up to the holiday rush, this time of year can either be expensive, or can be a great opportunity to be conscious of consumption and reduce our environmental impact. Here are some ways to slow down this season, take a pause, and notice how sustainable habits can also be mindful.

For those who shift gears back into school, there are many options to reduce waste! Usually there are a few good leftover supplies from last year, but those you want to chuck in the bin can actually be brought to many office supply stores to be recycled! When getting new supplies, you can explore items made with friendlier materials such as recycled paper, bamboo or compostable products, and refillable stationary. Many of these go for a comparable price to regular supplies, and can save you money in the long run.

Next, when reaching for new cozy items this fall, start with a mindful pause. Consider their purpose, longevity, and thrifty alternatives. For example, while indulging in new candles can be a perfect way to treat yourself this season, so can spending a slow Saturday morning melting old candle bits into new, recycled candles. Alternatively, try hanging lavender, rosemary, or eucalyptus for a chemical-free option. You may be surprised at the satisfaction using natural or recycled materials can make the season feel even more comforting and authentic.

When celebrating holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving, you can also be intentional with purchases. Before buying a new Halloween costume, you could explore creative swaps — maybe piecing one together from your closet, trading with a friend, or checking local marketplaces. And if you do buy your own, there are loads of sustainable choices like more natural fabrics instead of polyester.  And when it comes to décor for your home, nature can be a beautiful source of inspiration, giving you a moment to get grounded outside as you search for the perfect accessories. Local farms often have a variety of fun-shaped gourds to choose from and special events to support in these months. You might find what you’re looking from there to sparkle up your home for the season. And lastly, in the kitchen this time of year, soup and stew season is a great opportunity for reusing food scraps, and also make tasty, nutritious meals!

This year as you transition into fall, you can embrace the season by spending more time outdoors, harvesting natural elements for your home, and savouring a mindful pause before making purchases.
